Benefits of Breast Augmentation Surgery

Dr. Anu Bajaj and her team treat women with a variety of cosmetic concerns related to their breasts. Women consider breast augmentation for a number of different reasons, and some reasons may include:

  • Enlarge breast size
  • Enhance body proportions
  • Correct asymmetry (when one breast is larger or sits higher than the other)
  • Restore lost volume due to breastfeeding or weight loss
  • Revise a previous breast surgery or correct damaged or older implants
  • Restore breast shape
  • Improve self-confidence and find clothes that flatter their body and shape

How to Choose the Size of Your Breast Implants

The decision on what size implants you should choose is an incredible and important decision. There are many aspects to consider before choosing a size, including how active your lifestyle is, the proportions of your shoulders and hips, and your preferred shape. Patients have the choice between round or teardrop-shaped breast implants. You will also have to decide on the projection of your implants. Dr. Bajaj offers Vector 3D imaging and implant sizers to help her patients determine the size of their implants.

Types of Implants to Choose From

Bajaj Plastic Surgery offers a variety of options to choose from that allow patients to customize their procedure plan. These options include:

measurement of breast size for the selection of the implant

Silicone Gel Implants

Silicone implants typically feel softer and look the most natural. They’re named for the medical-grade silicone that fills the silicone implant shell. We use FDA-approved Sientra silicone gel breast implants at Bajaj Plastic Surgery for their unrivaled safety profile and longevity. Not only are Sientra implants safe, but they are backed with a 20-year warranty, the longest length of coverage available. In addition, Sientra implants are designed to hold their shape and remain remarkably soft. With over two surface types, over 340 implant options, and five projection levels, Sientra breast implants offer the most customization of any silicone implant on the market.

Saline Implants

Unlike silicone implants, which are pre-filled, saline implants are first placed in the breast pocket and then filled to the patient’s desired size with sterile saline water. This gives saline implants a small advantage since a small incision is required to place and adjust the implant size.

Types of Implant Profile Variations

In addition to size, the profile refers to the projection of the implants. These projection profiles come in four variations: low, moderate, moderate plus, and high. For example, a moderate plus or high-profile implant will give you more fullness on the top part of your chest, lending to more cleavage. The Vectra 3-D simulation can help you see the possibilities of each projection to find the aesthetic you like the most.

Types of Implant Placement

Dr. Bajaj can place the implants either sub-glandular (under the breast tissue) or sub-muscular (under the pectoral muscle). When an implant is placed sub-glandular, the implant can have more of a rounded appearance. This placement is most often used on women with enough natural breast tissue to provide adequate implant coverage.

When an implant is placed sub-muscular, it provides a more natural slope to the top part of the breast. Therefore, it’s more commonly performed on thin patients with less natural breast tissue to cover the implant. This placement is less likely to ripple and provides a more natural appearance.

Types of Breast Augmentation Incisions

Dr. Bajaj offers three possible incision sites. She will recommend the best one for you, your implant size, profile, and placement.

  • An Inframammary incision is placed underneath the breast in its natural crease.
  • Transaxillary incision is inserted through the axilla or the underarm.
  • A periareolar incision involves inserting the implant through the lower half of the areola. This technique involves the least amount of scarring.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Oklahoma City Breast Augmentation?

If you are considering breast augmentation, you should be in good health and live a healthy, active lifestyle. However, if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking medications that might interfere with your results or recovery, you may not be a good candidate for surgery. During your consultation with Dr. Bajaj, she will request a full medical history to help determine if surgery is safe for you.

Breast Augmentation Procedure Process

The operation is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes about an hour to complete. First, Dr. Bajaj will mark the incision spot with the measurement guidelines discussed in your consultation. Next, the anesthetic will be administered, and the area will be prepared with an antibiotic solution. The incision will be made along with an implant pocket, and then Dr. Bajaj will insert your implant using the Keller funnel, or “no touch,” technique. This technique is believed to reduce the risk of infection and capsular contracture since the implant isn’t touched by anyone. It is removed from its box in the sterile field, immediately placed in antibiotic irrigation, and then placed inside the breast pocket.

Lastly, the incision site will be closed and dressed, and a support bra that you will wear for the remainder of your recovery will be placed.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Once your surgery is complete and you’ve woken up, Dr. Bajaj will give you detailed instructions on caring for your incisions and new breasts. Recovery is different for everyone, but most patients can return to work in three to five days, and most can return to their normal activities, such as exercise, within two weeks. Soreness and swelling are expected for the first one to two weeks, but with Dr. Bajaj’s pain maintenance plan, any discomfort should be managed and well-tolerated.

Breast Augmentation in Oaklahoma FAQs

What is the benefit of using the Keller Funnel in the breast augmentation procedure? The Keller funnel allows the implant to be placed in the breast pocket through a relatively small incision in atraumatic manner.  Also, there have been reports that the use of the Keller funnel reduces the risk of capsular contracture.  I use the Keller funnel for all of my breast implant procedures.

How do you choose the best profile, style and implant size for me? During your consultation, I will take measurements of your breasts and perform an examination of your breasts and soft tissues.  This information combined with a discussion of your goals and expectations allows me to make some initial recommendations regarding implant size.  We also have the Vectra 3D imaging device and implant sizers which are other tools that will help both of us to make a good choice for you.

How should I prepare for my virtual consultation? While we prefer an in-person consultation (since nothing is better), we do have the option of a virtual consultation under select circumstances.  Prior to your consultation, you will receive instructions on how to upload your photos to your TouchMD account and how to complete the necessary intake forms.

When do I need an internal bra or Galaflex for Breast augmentation? Galaflex, also know as an internal bra, is a soft tissue scaffolding made of absorbable suture material.  It helps to support an implant if your own tissues are weak or if the implant is large.  I believe that it is a useful adjunct in revisionary breast surgery or if your skin doesn’t have good elasticity.

Will I have cleavage? Can my breast be placed higher on my chest? Your breast footprint is defined by your inframammary fold and the top of your breast (if you cup your breast in our hand, you can visualize where the top of your breast tissue sits).  These landmarks represent your breast footprint which is a part of your unique anatomy and cannot be changed.  An implant will raise the top border of your breast by 1-2 cm, but it will not move your footprint.  Cleavage, or the space between your breasts is similarly defined by your anatomy and chest wall.

How do I know if I will need to combine a breast lift with implants? A breast lift may be necessary if your breasts are ptotic or ‘droopy.’  If you look at your breasts, and your nipples appear to be below your breast tissue or point to the floor, you may need a breast lift.

What is the recovery like? When can I start exercising? The first three days after surgery will feel the worst – I usually describe it as feeling like you did a 100 push-ups or bench presses since your chest muscles will feel tight and sore.  After those first few days, you will gradually start to feel better.  Most women are able to start lower body workouts after about 2-3 weeks.  I recommend that you refrain from performing chest workouts specifically for about 3 months.

What is the “no touch technique”? The ‘no touch technique’ means that the breast implant is not directly handled by the surgeon, surgical staff, and does not touch your skin during insertions.  This means that when the implant box is opened on the sterile field, the implant is immediately placed in antibiotic irrigation and then placed inside you using a Keller funnel.  This type of technique is believed to reduce the risk of infection and capsular contracture.

What Type of Breast Implant Looks and Feel the Most Natural? Silicone implants typically feel softer and look more natural.  Saline implants are filled with salt water so then tend to feel more like a water balloon and can have more of a ‘fake’ look if they are over-filled.

Will My Nipple Lose Sensation? After surgery, you may experience numbness or hypersensitivity.  These issues typically resolve by about 6 months after surgery.  There is a small risk of losing sensation to your nipple – the risk is about 2-5% for permanent numbness.

Will I Have Drains After Breast Augmentation? I do not use drains for a breast augmentation that is not combined with any additional procedures.

Will Sutures Need to Be Removed After Breast Augmentation? No. The sutures that I use to close the skin are the type of sutures that dissolve.

How Long Will I Be Out of Work? Most people are able to return to work after 3-5 days if their jobs do not require any heavy lifting or strenuous activity.

What are the most common complications of breast augmentation? While complications are rare, there are both short-term and long-term complications.  Short-term complications include infection and hematoma (bleeding around the implant).  Long-term complications include capsular contracture, implant rupture, and implant malposition.

How do I make sure that I get the size that I want? We have several tools to help you determine the size of the implant.  These include our Vectra 3D imaging as well as implant sizers.  I also encourage women to remember that aesthetic features of a breast also include shape and proportion, not just size.

Will There Be A Scar? I typically place the breast implant through a small incision under your breast in the crease.  It fades after about a year.  I prefer this approach because it allows me to directly visualize the pocket and has a lower risk of loss of sensation to your nipple as well as a lower risk of capsular contracture.

Can an Implant Break? How Would I Know If It Did? Implants can rupture.  Typically, the rupture risk of an implant is related to the age of the implant, not anything that you do to it.  I typically advise patients that the risk of rupture is about 1-2% per year for every year that you have the implant.  If a saline implant ruptures, you will know because the saline will be absorbed by your body, and one breast will be smaller (like a flat tire).  If a silicone implant ruptures, you may notice small changes with the feel or shape of your breast, or you may notice no changes.  The current FDA recommendations advise that you obtain a high-resolution ultrasound every 3-5 years to assess for silent rupture of silicone implants.

Can I Still Get Mammograms After Breast Implants Are Placed? Yes, you will still be able to get mammograms.  Breast implants have the potential to obscure a small amount of breast tissue, so you will need to ensure that your mammographer knows you have breast implants.  In order to visualize the entire breast, your mammographer will obtain some additional views by moving the implant out of the way.

My Breasts Feel Tight After Surgery. Will I Hurt Something If I Move? No, you will not damage anything if you move – just listen to your body.  Your breasts feel tight because of the pressure of the implant and the way it is stretching your tissues.  This is normal.  Gentle range of motion will actually help you to feel better – I recommend gently massaging the top part of your pectoralis muscle and performing gentle stretches.

Do I Need to Wear a Bra After Breast Augmentation? After surgery, we will place you in a post-surgical bra which you will wear for two weeks.  After that, we recommend that you wear a sports bra without an underwire for the next 2-3 months.

Is This Operation Performed Under General Anesthesia? Yes, I prefer to perform the surgery under general anesthesia because then you are more comfortable.

Does Someone Have to Stay With Me After Surgery? Since your surgery is performed under general anesthesia, we recommend that you have a responsible adult stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.

Will I Need My Breast Implants Replaced in The Future? Breast implants are not lifetime devices.  You may need to have them replaced in the future for a number of different reasons including rupture, capsular contracture, or changes in your body.  The risk of rupture is related to the age of the implant – in other words, the older the implant, the higher the risk of rupture.

Why are you a great choice for my breast augmentation procedure? We are an office of women and can understand the insecurities you may feel with your breasts – we want you to feel comfortable and welcomed.  I had a breast augmentation after being told that I ‘looked like a boy’ while in my 20s.  Because of this experience, I also understand first-hand what the recovery process is like.  Also, my staff and I are committed to ensuring that you have a successful surgical experience from the consultation and beyond.

How do I go about vetting the best breast augmentation surgeons? When selecting a surgeon, you should consider board certification – a plastic surgeon should be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery – as well as if you feel comfortable with the surgeon and office staff.  Also, you should have the opportunity to review before and after photos to help you determine if the aesthetic values of both you and the surgeon are in alignment.
