What You Need to Know About MiraDry
As the Oklahoma weather heats up for summer, many of us are met with unwelcome and embarrassing underarm sweat. For individuals with hyperhidrosis or those who generally struggle to control their underarm sweat, the warmer months can be a constant struggle of hiding sweat stains, combating body odor, and avoiding the heat.
At Bajaj Plastic Surgery, we’re passionate about giving our patients the opportunity to live a healthy and active lifestyle. That’s why we offer MiraDry, a non-surgical procedure that dramatically reduces underarm sweat and odor permanently.
If you struggle with underarm sweat and odor, now is the perfect time to try MiraDry, and enjoy a sweat-free summer. Here’s everything you need to know about this incredible procedure.
Who Is a Good Candidate for MiraDry?
MiraDry can benefit anyone who struggles to control underarm sweat or those who have been diagnosed with axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating in the underarms). If you often experience excessive sweating throughout the day and deal with sweat stains or permanent underarm odor in your clothing, MiraDry might be right for you. It can also benefit people who experience skin irritation caused by excessive sweating while exercising.
You may be wondering, “Isn’t sweat necessary?” Yes, sweating is essential to help cool the body down. However, the sweat glands in the underarms make up only 2% of our bodies’ sweat glands, making it safe to reduce sweat in just the underarm area. Following your treatment, you will still produce sweat, just not in your underarms.
How Does a MiraDry Procedure Work?
A single MiraDry session takes approximately one hour from start to finish. We will start by numbing the underarm area with a local anesthetic. Then, we will mark the target area with a temporary tattoo for accuracy. Finally, we use the MiraDry technology to treat the area with heat energy to eliminate the sweat and odor glands in the underarm. You will not feel any pain due to the local anesthetic, but you may feel a suction sensation while the area is being treated.
Following your procedure, you may experience redness and swelling in the treated area for up to two weeks. Slight discomfort in the armpits could last for a few days. We recommend applying a cold compress and taking over-the-counter pain medication to manage your symptoms. You can return to your normal routine immediately but should avoid moderate to intense physical activity for at least a few days.
What Results Should You Expect?
MiraDry results are immediate and permanent. Unlike some aesthetic treatments, MiraDry eliminates sweat glands in the underarms permanently. You should notice a dramatic difference in sweat production within a few days of your treatment.
For most individuals, one treatment is sufficient to reduce sweating. This can vary between patients and will be determined on an individual basis. Approximately 10% of patients need a second MiraDry treatment to achieve optimal results.
Is MiraDry Covered by Insurance?
MiraDry is not typically covered by insurance, but it is the first and only FDA-approved treatment to permanently reduce underarm sweat in as little as one appointment. You may be able to use your HSA/FSA funds toward MiraDry. Please contact your HSA/FSA manager to find out.
Each MiraDry treatment is customized according to your needs, and the number of treatments required may vary. Your first treatment will cost approximately $1,950. If needed, an additional treatment could cost between $1,250 and $1,500. We offer a number of financing options that we can discuss with you at your consultation.
