 What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat from the body. It is commonly used to treat areas of the body that are resistant to diet and exercise, such as the abdomen, thighs, arms, back, and neck. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure – rather, it is meant to sculpt the body and improve its contours. If you are at your goal weight and maintain a healthy diet but find that you still have stubborn pockets of fat, then liposuction may be able to help you reach your goals.

The Benefits of Liposuction

  • Improvement in the appearance of areas of stubborn fat
  • An improvement in body proportions
  • A Boost in self-confidence

Where Can Liposuction Be Used?

Both men and women frequently consider liposuction.  A liposuction procedure can be performed on many areas of the body including:

  • Abdomen
  • Breasts/chest
  • Thighs
  • Neck
  • Back
  • Arms
  • Knees & ankles

At your consultation, Dr. Bajaj will review your specific goals and help you determine which areas of the body would benefit most from liposuction.

How Can Liposuction Be Performed?

There are many different phrases used for liposuction including Smart Lipo, Laser Liposuction, power-assisted liposuction, and tumescent liposuction, amongst others.  At Bajaj Plastic Surgery, we believe that the most important aspect of liposuction is the person performing the procedure – Your Surgeon.  The surgical results following liposuction are dependent on the surgeon and the patient.

Dr. Bajaj utilizes a tumescent technique in which a saline and epinephrine wetting solution is injected into the targeted area before fat is removed by suction. The wetting solution is used to constrict blood vessels, which helps to minimize blood loss during the procedure.

Liposuction procedures can also be combined with Renuvion for improved tightening and contraction of the soft tissues.

What to Expect After Liposuction

Dr Bajaj will give you a post-surgical compression garment to wear for 4-6 weeks. You’ll also be given aftercare instructions for smooth liposuction recovery. It’s important to follow these instructions and attend any follow-up appointments that are scheduled at our Oklahoma City plastic surgery office. Dr Bajaj will prescribe appropriate medications to keep you comfortable after your procedure, as you’ll experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising.

Best Liposuction OKC – Frequently Asked Questions

How does liposuction work? Liposuction is performed by infiltrating the area with a tumescent solution (a solution that contains local anesthesia and epinephrine to decrease bleeding).  After the solution has been allowed to take effect, a liposuction device/cannula is used to suction unwanted fat until the desired improvement in contour has been achieved.

What not to do after Liposuction? Since tumescent solution is used for liposuction, it is very common to have pink kool-aid colored drainage for the first 24-48 hours after surgery.  I advise all of my patients that it is best to lie on a towel and wear clothing that may get stained.  So, I would suggest that you do not lie on a white couch for the first few days after surgery!

What to expect after Liposuction? After your procedure, we will place you in a post-operative compression garment and lipofoam which helps to continue to shape your results and decrease your swelling.  You will have bruising and swelling that will last for about 2-3 weeks.  After the bruising resolves, you will continue to see improvement in your results – a change in the way your clothes fit and drape – for the next 6 months.

How much weight can you lose with Liposuction? Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure.  It is a body contouring and fat removal procedure.  You will obtain the best results if you are at your goal weight and use liposuction to address stubborn areas of fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise.  Liposuction is also useful for improving contour, not weight loss.

How much fat can liposuction remove? The amount of fat that can be removed depends on the contour that you desire, your anatomy, and safety considerations.  With liposuction, since we are removing the fat between your muscle and skin layers, if too much fat is removed you could experience complications including contour irregularities, loose skin, and skin necrosis.  Additionally, there are safety considerations.  Since liposuction involves the injection of tumescent solution and the subsequent removal of this fluid and fat, if too much fluid and fat is removed, it could cause fluid imbalances in your body.  Common safety recommendations include:  no more than 5 liters of fat if the procedures is performed as an outpatient, and no more than 2 liters of fat can be removed if liposuction is performed in conjunction with other procedures (such as an abdominoplasty).

How long does it take to recover from Liposuction? Recovery following surgery is a process.  Initially, after surgery, you will be bruised, swollen, and sore.  Most patients are able to drive after 3 days, and most can return to work after 3 days.  It will take an additional 3 weeks for the bruising to resolve, and the swelling will decrease slowly over the course of the next several months.

How long does liposuction last? The removal of the fat is permanent in the area that undergoes liposuction.  However, if you do not maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle and gain weight, you will gain weight in other areas.

How painful is liposuction? Liposuction can be uncomfortable.  I have had liposuction twice and found it to be more of a soreness as opposed to a sharp, stabbing pain. You will be under general anesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the procedure.  However, every patient is different, and your experience may not be the same as mine.  My staff and I will prescribe appropriate medications following surgery for your comfort.

How to sleep after liposuction? You will need to wear a compression garment for 6 weeks following liposuction.  The compression garment helps to reduce pain and swelling.  You wil need to wear the compression garment while sleeping as well.

What is the difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck? A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, involves a surgical incision in which the lower abdominal skin and fat is removed resulting in an incision from hip bone to hip bone and around your belly button.  Liposuction only involves the suctioning of fat so the excess skin is not removed.  Liposuction is frequently combined with an abdominoplasty to improve the contour of the abdomen and trunk.

When will I see results from Liposuction? The improvement in contour will be visible almost immediately, although you will be swollen and bruised.  You will see an initial decrease in bruising and swelling at the three weeks, and more significant improvement during the next 3-6 months.  I usually tell my patients that they will continue to see improvement in the way that their clothes fit and drape for about a year.

What is LIPO 360? LIPO 360 is when liposuction is performed in a circumferential manner around your abdomen, flanks, and back.  Our bodies are three dimensional, and when we also address the back, we are able to achieve a much better improvement in contour.
