What is a Tummy Tuck?

tummy tuck surgeryIf you desire a flatter, firmer midsection, tummy tuck surgery may be right for you. An abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a procedure that is designed to remove the excess skin and fat between your belly button and pubic bone that you can pinch. Men and women may consider a tummy tuck for a variety of reasons. Occasionally, men and women may notice that this excess skin and fat is unresponsive to diet and exercise. Similarly, women may find that the skin will not contract after childbirth and may have unsightly stretch marks. An Abdominoplasty is a body contouring procedure which is designed to improve the way you look and feel in your clothing. To ensure that you have good, long-lasting results, you should be at or close to your ideal weight. In addition to removing the excess skin and fat from your lower abdomen, Dr. Bajaj will also tighten your abdominal muscles which may have become separated with childbirth or weight gain. The result of this procedure is a smooth abdominal wall. This procedure is popularly paired with Liposuction if you require more fat removal and contouring of your waistline. A discussion with Dr. Bajaj during a consultation will help you decide the best option for you.

Benefits of a Tummy Tuck Procedure

Skin or muscle loosening can be caused by many factors, some of the more common reasons include: age, genetics, weight loss, previous surgeries, or pregnancy. A tummy tuck is a great option for moms who are struggling with sagging abdominal skin after pregnancy. If you are planning on becoming pregnant again, it is best to postpone your procedure until after you give birth. Tummy Tuck surgery is also beneficial for individuals who haven’t been able to flatten the excess skin on their bellies through diet and exercise alone. A tummy tuck procedure removes extra skin on your abdomen that sags and often extends to your side or back. It also gets rid of excess fat and tightens the abdominal muscles for individuals who suffer from muscle weakness. A tummy tuck will give you a slimmed midsection and instill you with a newfound confidence.

You will receive a preparation list for Tummy Tuck surgery that is individually created for your specific case. For all patients, you will be asked to stop smoking at least four weeks prior to your surgery and continue to refrain from smoking for six weeks afterwards. Smoking, especially the combination of tobacco and nicotine, can affect your ability to heal following surgery. Avoiding anti-inflammatory medications is important, and you may need to adjust some of your current medications. You will also need to complete certain tests and evaluations to ensure that you are healthy for this procedure. Prior to surgery, you will also need to bathe with Hibiclens skin cleanser to help decrease your risk of developing an infection. Arranging a ride to and from surgery should be done before your surgery as you will be unable to drive yourself home. You will also need to have someone stay with you and help you the first one or two nights. You should make sure you take enough time off from work to ensure ample resting time. Most individuals can return to work at a desk job within 10-14 days; however, it will be three weeks before you will be able to resume strenuous activities like working out. Following all preparation requirements will help you have a smooth recovery and optimal results.

Procedure & Techniques

The procedure/technique used will depend on your individual case. On the morning of surgery, Dr. Bajaj will greet you and place marking on you to identify key landmarks on your body as well as the proposed incision line. If you have a specific piece of clothing (such as a swimsuit or underwear) in which you would like to hide the scar, please bring that item so that she can try her best to hide your scar. An abdominoplasty is usually performed under a general anesthetic, meaning you will be asleep for the surgery. After you have received the anesthetic, Dr. Bajaj will begin by making an incision across the abdomen and toward each of the hip bones, with a second incision around the belly button. An incision across the lower abdomen allows Dr. Bajaj to remove loose, protruding tissue on the tummy, while tightening the stretched abdominal muscles. Dr. Bajaj will then carefully lift the skin so that she can stitch together and repair your abdominal muscles. She will place several quilting sutures to further contour the abdomen. The skin is then stretched back over the contours of your body with any excess skin or tissue removed to provide a smooth, even shape. Prior to closing your incisions, Dr. Bajaj will inject your tissues with Exparel — a long-acting local anesthetic which will help decrease your pain after surgery.

Companion procedures

Your tummy tuck will generally take between two to four hours, but varies from patient to patient. Tummy Tucks can also be performed in conjunction with other procedures such as a Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, or Breast Reduction. There are different techniques for those who require more specific surgery, such as targeting smaller areas.

Mini Tummy Tuck

If you do not require a Full Tummy Tuck, a Mini Tummy Tuck is an ideal alternative. It involves the removal of excess skin and tightening of the muscles underneath the belly button. The scar associated with this technique is smaller; and this procedure is more commonly performed with liposuction.

Modified Tummy Tuck

This modified technique is good for patients who only need to specifically address just the abdomen muscles or just repairing the skin. There is minimal scarring involved with this procedure and gives the best results for those who only require minor improvement.

Male Tummy Tuck

A Male Tummy Tuck is frequently performed on men who have lost a significant amount of weight or also struggle with the extra abdominal skin and fat below the belly button. The muscles are also frequently tightened with this procedure.

Liposuction is an ideal procedure for patients who have stubborn fat pockets that are unresponsive to diet and exercise. It removes fat deposits that lay between the muscle and skin through means of suctioning. It is not a solution for those who need to address a large amount of weight or excess skin.

Body Lift

If you have lost a significant amount of weight, a Tummy Tuck procedure may not be enough on its own. A Body Lift addresses enhancing the entire midsection. It involves the combination of a Tummy Tuck, Liposuction, Thigh Lift, and Buttock Lift. This is not meant for patients who only need to address small fat deposits.

Recovery Time After a Tummy Tuck

Tummy Tuck RecoveryRecovery time differs from patient to patient, but generally takes about 2-3 weeks. Dr. Bajaj will continue to monitor you after your Tummy Tuck surgery to ensure a smooth recovery. The surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure meaning that you will go home after your surgery. You will receive prescriptions for the appropriate medications at your preoperative visit with Dr. Bajaj prior to surgery. Dr. Bajaj believes in a multi-pronged approach to the treatment of post-operative pain. Therefore, she will inject your tissues with Exparel prior to the completion of your procedure. Exparel is a long-acting local anesthetic which will help numb your incisions for up to three days following surgery. In addition to the use of the Exaprel, you will receive prescriptions for a pain medication, anti-nausea medication, and an anti-inflammatory medication.

Your incision locations will be covered with dressings and a post-operative compression garment (medical-grade Spanx) to help reduce swelling. Dr. Bajaj may also use tubes to drain any excess fluid or blood after your procedure. Scarring will fade overtime. Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least 3 weeks. Dr. Bajaj will give you specific instructions on how to care for your incisions to reduce the risk of infection. Generally, you will continuously wear a compression garment, and may be able to shower after your first postoperative visit with Dr. Bajaj. Following your surgery, you will walk and remain in a partially bent position. During the first 7 days after surgery, you will gradually be able to resume a more upright position. During this time, many patients find it more comfortable to sleep in a recliner or to prop pillow under their back and knees. You will have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Bajaj within in the first two days after surgery, and then weekly until your drain tube is removed (this may stay for 7-10 days). You should be committed to maintaining your weight. Eating well and exercising is important for lasting results. Tummy tuck surgery is not a substitution for weight loss or exercise. Pregnancies or significant weight loss or gain may affect tummy tuck results. But if you follow all the postoperative instructions, both short and long term, you can experience beautiful results for many years.

Cost of a Tummy Tuck

The price of your procedure will be dependent on the extent of your specific surgical requirements. Adding additional procedures along with your tummy tuck will also affect the cost; however, the cost typically ranges between $6000.00-$12,000.00. When you receive your quote at your consultation, you will receive an all inclusive quote which includes surgeon’s fees, anesthesia fees, facility fees, pre- and post-operative care, and your post-surgical garment. Call us at Bajaj plastic surgery to schedule your consultation to discuss your options and begin your path to a beautifully toned abdomen.
