Many women who get breast implants will need – or want – to have them removed and replaced at some point in their lives. If you are considering a revision of a prior breast surgery, please schedule your consultation with Dr. Bajaj.
Why Consider Breast Revision Surgery
Implants are not designed to last forever. While there are exceptions, implant rupture and capsular contracture are two common reasons why women come to Bajaj Plastic Surgery for breast revision surgery. Alternatively, some women may find that they have “outgrown” their implants personally and desire a decrease in size, or to return to their natural breast size and contour. Whatever the reason, Dr. Bajaj at Bajaj Plastic Surgery is here to help; she is a board certified plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Also, she is highly experienced in performing breast revision procedures for women who require new implants, desire a change in their implants, or who want to return to their natural breast size. About Breast Revision Surgery
Revisionary surgery following previous breast surgery is performed on women who have already undergone primary breast augmentation and want to replace their breast implants for cosmetic change or need to replace their implants because of implant rupture, capsular contracture, or the age of the implants.
Women choose to have breast revision surgery for many reasons. Some of the issues that breast revision surgery can correct include:
- Changing the size or material of the implant
- Implants have shifted in position
- Capsular contracture
- Implant rupture
- Implant rippling
- Breast asymmetry
Dr. Bajaj works closely with all her clients, listening to their wants and needs, to develop a personalized procedure plan tailored to your body and lifestyle.
Good Candidates for Breast Revision
Good candidates for surgery should be in good health, at a stable weight, and be nonsmokers. They should have realistic expectations for the outcome of the surgery and understand what breast revision can and cannot accomplish. These procedures are elective procedures and are typically performed because you desire a change in the appearance of your breasts due to weight fluctuations, the aging process, or implant-related issues. The surgery and recovery will be similar to your initial breast augmentation surgery.
If you are interested in completely removing your implants you can click here to read about breast implant removal surgery. Women who wish to remove their implants completely, but have very thin breast tissue due to the size of their implants, may need to get smaller implants inserted or undergo a fat transfer breast augmentation. These procedures will leave women with smaller breasts, closer to their natural cup size, that still look natural and beautiful. Dr. Bajaj can help women who are unhappy with the results of their primary breast augmentation achieve a look that makes them confident and happy. The only way to find out if you are a good candidate is by contacting us and scheduling a consultation.
Once Dr. Bajaj has determined that you are a suitable candidate for breast revision surgery, then she will develop a personalized procedure plan. During the consultation, Dr. Bajaj will discuss with you why you desire breast revision surgery and what your goals are. If you require breast revision due to implant rupture or capsular contracture, be sure to bring any additional medical records or test results that you may have to your consultation. Dr. Bajaj may recommend additional or alternative procedures that will better help you to accomplish your aesthetic goals. The consultation is the first step in any breast revision surgery. Before the Procedure
At the time of the consultation, Dr. Bajaj will provide you with more detailed information about how to prepare for your surgery. Preparation for a breast revision procedure is similar to how women prepare for a breast augmentation. If the you smoke, then you will be required to quit at least three weeks prior to surgery as smoking can have seriously negative effects on the procedure and recovery. Also, you will need to stop taking anti-inflammatory medications, including ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen, two weeks prior to the surgery. Additionally, if Dr. Bajaj has made any alterations to medications or supplements that you take, you should follow these instructions. For anyone considering an elective surgical procedure, it is important to optimize your nutrition with a healthy diet high in protein and vitamins to ensure good wound healing and a smooth recovery.
Breast Revision Surgery
The breast revision surgery is performed under general anesthesia and as an outpatient procedure. This means that you will go home to recover following the surgery. However, since you will have received anesthesia, you should make arrangements prior to the surgery for somebody to be with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.
Dr. Bajaj encourages you to bring all your questions and concerns so you can discuss these at the consultation visits. If your original implants were inserted using an inframammary incision, Dr. Bajaj will likely be able to remove the original implant and insert the new implant using that same incision. However, if your primary breast augmentation utilized a transaxillary incision, then Dr. Bajaj will need to make a new incision to retrieve the old implant and insert the new implant. If you have capsular contracture, then Dr. Bajaj will need to remove the hardened capsule from the breast pocket prior to inserting new implants. No breast revision procedure is the same, as there are many personal factors that you and Dr. Bajaj must determine prior to the surgery.
While a breast revision will fix issues or concerns that you have with your current implant, it will not fix breasts that have started to sag due to gravity, aging, pregnancy, or weight fluctuation. If you have sagging or pendulous breasts, you may want to consider undergoing a breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, in addition to their breast revision. The two procedures can easily be combined and will restore youthful shape and elevation to your breasts.
Often, breast procedures are performed at the same time as body procedure for a beautiful transformation. Women who have recently given birth or lost a significant amount of weight may have excess skin on their abdomen that will not respond to exercise.
A tummy tuck removes this excess skin, meanwhile tightening the abdominal muscles to give you a more toned and defined look. A breast revision performed in combination with a tummy tuck can completely rejuvenate a woman’s appearance.
For women interested in a breast revision, breast lift, and a tummy tuck, Dr. Bajaj recommends the Mommy Makeover package. A Mommy Makeover is a combination of procedures designed to help mothers regain their pre-baby body. With this procedure, women can choose any combination from the following procedures: breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast revision, breast lift, tummy tuck, and/or liposuction. Liposuction is typically included to help women get rid of extra fat deposits that are not responding to diet and exercise.
How Long Does It Take To Recover From A Breast Revision Surgery?
Recovery from a breast revision procedure may be similar to your previous breast augmentation surgery. Following surgery, you will be in a post-surgical bra to help minimize bruising and swelling and also speed up recovery time. Dr. Bajaj will prescribe pain medication and anti-nausea medication for your post-operative comfort. Most will be off work for 3-5 days. You will also have several follow-up appointments with Dr. Bajaj and her staff to ensure that your recovery is going smoothly. Over the next several weeks, the swelling will continue to decrease and the discomfort will dissipate. At this point, any discomfort associated with the procedure can be controlled with an over-the-counter medication.
How Much Does It Cost For A Breast Revision?
The cost of breast revision surgery will depend on many factors. Some of these include the new implant type, ancillary procedures, and postoperative care. At the time of the consultation, Dr. Bajaj and her staff will discuss the options for surgery and pricing with you. If you are interested in financing options, we do offer both CareCredit and Alphaeon. At the time of the consultation, you will have the opportunity to speak with a member of our staff dedicated to patient financing. Request a consultation today to get started!
