What Is a Neck Lift?

The earliest signs of aging may appear in the neck area. A neck lift is a way to subtly diminish these signs of aging through the removal of excess skin and fat. If you’re bothered by deep lines, wrinkles or sagging skin on your neck, consider a neck lift with Dr. Anu Bajaj in Oklahoma City.

Neck lift surgery is a safe and effective way to tighten underlying neck muscles to improve muscle tone. After a neck lift, your skin will appear tighter and smoother — creating a more attractive, youthful-looking contour. A neck lift, also known as lower rhytidectomy, addresses the loose skin that hangs under the chin, which can add years to your appearance and creates the impression of a “turkey gobbler.”

The neck lift is a surgical procedure that reduces the amount of excess skin to lift the profile of the face and neck and create a younger appearance. Despite its many advantages, a neck lift may not be for everyone. The best way to find out if you’re an ideal candidate is to schedule a consultation at Bajaj Plastic Surgery.

Benefits of Neck Lift Surgery

Neck lift surgery can address these issues:

  • Excess fat deposits in the neck
  • Sagging or excess neck skin
  • Jowls or a double chin

Considering a Neck Lift?

Neck Lift Procedure Preparation

Dr. Bajaj recommends the following to ensure optimal neck lift results and recovery.

  • Avoid anti-inflammatory medication for two weeks prior to the procedure
  • Smoking patients should quit at least four weeks before their procedure
  • Complete a medical evaluation with your primary doctor in advance of the procedure
  • Fill your prescriptions and arrange for transportation after the procedure, as you will be unable to drive for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • Arrange for a friend and loved one to assist you around the house during the first day or two of your recovery.

A neck lift surgery takes between two to three hours to perform under general anesthesia. The procedure starts by making two incisions behind or under the ears. The skin is then lifted and trimmed away. An additional incision may be made underneath your chin to access the platysma, which is the neck muscle. The platysma will be tightened. Dr. Bajaj will manipulate or remove some of the excess tissue to improve contour. The skin is then redraped tightly across the neck to give the lower face a more youthful appearance. The incisions are closed using sutures for minimal scarring.

A neck lift is a great procedure for addressing a specific set of aging issues, but some patients may desire more comprehensive rejuvenation. The neck lift may be performed in conjunction with many different treatments to achieve a variety of goals. Some of the most common additional and alternative procedures with a neck lift include:

Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction can serve as a safe and effective addition to a neck lift for sculpting away fat. Liposuction is performed to remove the excess fat from the neck area and improve the contour under the chin. Liposuction targets stubborn pockets of fat that linger under the chin and around the neck that do not respond to dieting or exercise. It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is performed by using a hollow tube called a cannula that suctions out fat tissue.

Facelift Procedure

Facelifts and neck lifts are popular treatments to pair together because they achieve a full-facial rejuvenation. The facelift requires incisions along the hairline and above the ears that allow the underlying muscle layer to raised, improving symptoms such as jowling, and sagging skin that break the neckline.

Brow Lift Procedure

The brow lift is another facial rejuvenation surgical technique that specifically addresses facial aging around the eyes and brows. The procedure involves incisions along the hairline at the top of the forehead, following the hairline. Once the incisions are made, excess skin is removed from the top of the forehead and the brow is lifted upward for a refreshed appearance.

Each of these procedures can be performed at the same time as your neck lift procedure. More information will be discussed at your consultation.

Immediately after the procedure is complete, you will be taken to a post-operative recovery room to rest and receive instructions for your aftercare.

Each patient’s recovery time varies because individuals heal at different rates. Bandages are applied to the treatment area following surgery and a compression garment may be worn for the first few days to decrease swelling and improve circulation. There will be some discomfort immediately following the procedure, but this can be managed using medications prescribed by Dr. Bajaj.

Bruising will be visible for the first few days. Swelling should dissipate within a few weeks. Normal, light activity can be resumed within one to two weeks, but patients are advised to avoid movement that puts a strain on the treated area for the first several days. The scars are naturally well-hidden but will continue to fade over the following 12 to 18 months. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled a few days after your procedure to assess recovery and results.

Possible complications of neck surgery include infection, bleeding, changes in sensitivity, and asymmetry. To minimize the risk of complications, your medical history will be discussed during the consultation, as well as steps you can take to help ensure the best outcome.

Some improvement will be immediately visible after the procedure, but results will become more and more apparent as healing completes. The neck lift achieves a lifted, youthful neck contour, eliminates excess sagging skin, turkey gobblers and sculpts submental fat from under the chin.

Pricing for a neck lift depends on the individual expectations, desires, and conditions of the patient. Once your case is examined at your consultation, a price estimate will be shown once all factors have been considered.
