While many may first associate a tummy tuck with women, men can also benefit from a tummy tuck. More men are receiving tummy tucks to help them attain the physique they desire. While the procedure is slightly different for men, it is not a gender-specific procedure.
What is a male tummy tuck?
The male tummy tuck, clinically known as abdominoplasty, is a procedure that removes excess skin from the abdominal region, the skin you can pinch between your belly button and pubic bone, while also tightening the underlying muscles and skin. This creates a midsection that is firmer and defined. The incision is made just below the pant line and is easily concealed with clothing or swimsuits.
While both men and women can have this procedure, the male tummy tuck has some subtle differences when compared with a tummy tuck in women. The male tummy tuck focuses less on the body’s curves and more on a flat, and firm abdomen. Liposuction can also be paired with a male tummy tuck to reduce excess fat on the love handles and waist. Why do men get tummy tucks?
The male tummy tuck can help you if you experience excess sagging skin on your abdomens due to weight loss after a gastric bypass or lap band surgery or after effective diet and exercise. This procedure can also help men who have been affected by the natural effects of age, genetics, or from previous surgeries.
This procedure has helped many of our male patients remove excess sagging skin that often extends over the pant line. The male tummy tuck procedure performed by Dr. Bajaj will help you sculpt and define your midsection and instill newfound confidence.
Who is a good candidate for a male tummy tuck?
Candidates for this procedure are men who are looking to sculpt and tighten their abdomen due to excess and sagging skin. Most commonly, patients may seek this procedure due to weight loss. Candidates for this procedure should be at or near their ideal weight and maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen. This surgery should not be used as a means for weight loss.
Candidates should be in good health, be a nonsmoker or quit smoking prior to surgery, maintain a stable weight, and have no underlying medical conditions that can pose a risk to a good recovery or may make surgery contraindicated.
Male Tummy Tuck Consultation
During initial consultation, you will meet with Dr. Bajaj to discuss your goals, expectation, and concerns about the procedure. Upon reviewing your medical history, previous surgeries, and medications, Dr. Bajaj will then determine if the male tummy tuck is both a safe and effective option for you. She will explain the process. With your goals in mind and her extensive knowledge, she will determine the treatment plan to provide you with optimal results.
Patient safety is always a priority at Bajaj Plastic Surgery. If you choose to schedule surgery, we will provide you with pre- and post-operative instructions. You will also receive a list of medications that you can and can’t take before surgery.
If you smoke or use nicotine products, we recommend that you stop using these products for at least four weeks before surgery and six weeks after surgery. Smoking, or using other nicotine products, can greatly affect your body’s ability to heal efficiently after surgery. We also advise that you arrange for a ride home following your procedure, as you will be unable to drive yourself. You should have someone on-call for the first few days after your procedure to help if there are any complications that arise. Following all preparation requirements will help ensure a smooth recovery.
Male Tummy Tuck Procedure
On the day of the procedure, an anesthesiologist will administer general anesthesia and ensure you are safe and comfortable. Dr. Bajaj will begin the procedure by performing liposuction, if needed, to remove the excess fat. She will then make an incision above the pubic hair line, spanning from hip to hip, and carefully lift the skin and repair the stretched abdominal muscles. The skin will then be stretched back over the abdomen, and any excess is removed. Prior to closing the final incisions, she will inject your tissues with a local anesthetic, called Exparel, to help decrease any discomfort after the procedure.
When the procedure is finished, drains may be inserted to help remove any surgical fluid, and the incisions will be closed using absorbable sutures. After the incisions are closed, a compression garment will be placed around your abdomen.
Your tummy tuck surgery generally will take between two to four hours to perform, depending on your case. In certain cases, your tummy tuck can be combined with other procedures, such as gynecomastia excision or a body lift. During the consultation, Dr. Bajaj will discuss your treatment options with you and let you know if additional procedures would be beneficial to help you achieve your desired results.
After the male tummy tuck procedure, you will be taken to the recovery area and monitored by our nursing staff to ensure your safety before being released home. You should wear the compression garment provided for four to six weeks following surgery. To reduce the risk of poor circulation and clotting, you should also walk every few hours following surgery. One to two days after surgery, you will return for your initial post-op appointment. This will allow Dr. Bajaj to monitor your healing.
You will need to avoid strenuous activities for two to three weeks; however, you will be able to resume daily activities within one to two weeks. You should be committed to maintaining a healthy weight to ensure the longevity of your results. Dr. Bajaj recommends exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet. If you have any questions during this time, you are encouraged to call our office and speak with a helpful member of staff.
