What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat from the body. It is commonly used to treat areas that are resistant to diet and exercise, such as the abdomen, thighs, arms, back, and neck. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure; rather, it is intended to sculpt the body and improve its contours. If you are at your goal weight, maintain a healthy diet, and still have stubborn pockets of fat, liposuction may help you achieve your desired results.

The Benefits of Liposuction

  • Improvement in the appearance of areas of stubborn fat
  • An improvement in body proportions
  • A boost in self-confidence

To help prepare patients, a nutritional plan will be created both before and after their surgery, a proactive pain and nausea management schedule will be carefully implemented, as well as our own personal testimonials from undergoing body procedures.

How Can Liposuction Be Performed?

There are many different terms used to describe liposuction, including SmartLipo, laser liposuction, power-assisted liposuction, and tumescent liposuction, among others. At Bajaj Plastic Surgery, we believe the most important aspect of liposuction is the person performing the procedure—your surgeon. Surgical results following liposuction depend on both the surgeon and the patient.

Dr. Bajaj utilizes a tumescent technique in which a saline and epinephrine solution is injected into the targeted area before fat is removed by suction. This solution constricts blood vessels, helping to minimize blood loss during the procedure.

Liposuction procedures may also be combined with Renuvion to enhance soft tissue tightening and contraction.

Where Can Liposuction Be Used?

Both men and women frequently consider liposuction. A liposuction procedure can be performed on many areas of the body, including:

  • Abdomen
  • Breasts/chest
  • Thighs
  • Neck
  • Back
  • Arms
  • Knees & ankles

At your consultation, Dr. Bajaj will review your specific goals and help you determine which areas of the body would benefit most from liposuction.

Best Liposuction in Oklahoma FAQs

How does liposuction work?

Liposuction is performed by infiltrating the treatment area with a tumescent solution, which contains local anesthesia and epinephrine to help decrease bleeding. After the solution has taken effect, a liposuction cannula is used to suction unwanted fat until the desired improvement in contour is achieved.

Because a tumescent solution is used during liposuction, it is very common to experience pink, Kool-Aid–colored drainage for the first 24–48 hours after surgery. Dr. Bajaj advises all patients to lie on a towel and wear clothing that may get stained during this time. For this reason, it is best to avoid lying on light-colored or white furniture for the first few days after surgery.

After your procedure, you will be placed in a post-operative compression garment with lipofoam, which helps shape your results and reduce swelling. You can expect bruising and swelling to last approximately two to three weeks. After the bruising resolves, you will continue to see improvement in your results—including changes in the way your clothes fit and drape—for up to six months.

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. It is a body-contouring and fat-removal procedure. You will achieve the best results if you are at your goal weight and use liposuction to address stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction is intended to improve body contour, not to promote weight loss.

The amount of fat that can be safely removed depends on your desired contour, individual anatomy, and overall safety considerations. During liposuction, fat is removed from the layer between the skin and muscle. If too much fat is removed, complications may occur, including contour irregularities, loose skin, and skin necrosis.

There are also important safety considerations related to fluid balance. Liposuction involves the injection of a tumescent solution followed by the removal of both fluid and fat. Removing excessive amounts can lead to fluid imbalances in the body. Common safety guidelines include removing no more than five liters of fat when the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and no more than two liters of fat when liposuction is combined with other procedures, such as an abdominoplasty.

Recovery following surgery is a process. Initially, after surgery, you will be bruised, swollen, and sore. Most patients are able to drive after 3 days, and most can return to work after 3 days. It will take an additional 3 weeks for the bruising to resolve, and the swelling will decrease slowly over the course of the next several months.

The removal of the fat is permanent in the area that undergoes liposuction. However, if you do not maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle and gain weight, you will gain weight in other areas.

Liposuction can be uncomfortable. I have had liposuction twice and found it to be more of a soreness as opposed to a sharp, stabbing pain. You will be under general anesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the procedure. However, every patient is different, and your experience may not be the same as mine. My staff and I will prescribe appropriate medications following surgery for your comfort.

You will need to wear a compression garment for 6 weeks following liposuction. The compression garment helps to reduce pain and swelling. You wil need to wear the compression garment while sleeping as well.

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, involves a surgical incision in which excess skin and fat are removed from the lower abdomen, resulting in an incision that extends from hip bone to hip bone and around the belly button. Liposuction, by contrast, involves only the removal of fat and does not address excess skin. Liposuction is frequently combined with an abdominoplasty to further improve the contour of the abdomen and trunk.

The improvement in contour will be visible almost immediately, although some swelling and bruising are expected. You will notice an initial reduction in bruising and swelling by about three weeks, with more significant improvement occurring over the next three to six months. Patients are typically advised that they may continue to see improvements in the way their clothes fit and drape for up to a year.

LIPO 360 refers to liposuction performed in a circumferential manner around the abdomen, flanks, and back. Because the body is three-dimensional, addressing the back as well allows for a more comprehensive improvement in overall contour.
